Headmaster’s Welcome

Welcome to Kingswood House, the progressive, inclusive and friendly school for girls and boys aged 7 to 16 here in the heart of Epsom.

Profile of the Headmaster

Matthew joined KHS in April 2024, having spent six years as Head at Longacre prep school in Surrey. Before that his career took him from London day schools in Hampton and Wimbledon to boarding prep in Oxfordshire and Kent. His journey from traditional to progressive, from single-sex to co-ed, from 1000+ students to individual attention, led him to the firm belief that Kingswood House represents not just an invaluable educational option for families in this area, but also an exemplar of what a dynamic, pupil-centred, values-led 21st century can look like.

In spite of wanting to break the mould and run a different kind of school to the more stereotypical independent Surrey offering, Matthew feels very lucky to be married with two teenage children, a black Labrador and a poorly-trained Cavapoo. During his free time he enjoys yoga, talking about educational theory and riding carbon-fibre bikes which were designed for cyclists lighter and faster than he.

KHS is 125 years old this year, yet its motto of serva fidem – keep the faith – has never been more relevant. We believe in the transformative power of a school where everyone knows every child’s name, where students are listened to, challenged, celebrated and cared for. Our ethos centres around happiness: happy students, happy staff and happy parents. How we achieve this is pretty special, so please do come and visit us – the power of KHS is something you need to feel, not just read.
