Last week the Senior Able pupil group visited the government nuclear bunker at Kelvedon Hatch.
The bunker was designed to accommodate up to 600 military and civilian personnel, including the Prime Minister, whose collective task it would have been to organise the survival of the population in the awful aftermath of a nuclear war.
The bunker was in use until 1994. The boys entered the bunker via a simple bungalow, just inside there was a 120m long tunnel which led to the blast doors and main bunker. While in there the boys saw communications equipment, early warning detection systems, maps, the sewage and waste systems, living quarters and the hospital.
