Lower Prep

It is rare to find such a magical alchemy as in our Lower Prep where shyness and diffidence gradually evolve into confidence and enthusiasm. Our talented teachers offer a warm, nurturing environment where children receive outstanding care at the beginning of their school life. We accept boys in the term of their fifth birthday and support them through to the end of Year 4 when they move into Upper Prep as established and valuable members of our school community.

Lower Prep is situated in modern, purpose-built classrooms together with its own outdoor learning environment. It is close enough to the rest of the school that boys can interact with their older peers but secure enough that younger boys do not feel anxious in the presence of their older counterparts.
There is a strong programme of pupil mentorship, organised via our forward-thinking House Family system, where older boys take on responsibility for helping younger children understand and manifest the values of the Kingswood House Way. We have found that this approach yields outstanding results in terms of well-being and happiness.
Teachers plan carefully to ensure that lessons are dynamic and stimulating. Wherever possible, they are practical because we believe that this element of learning garners the best engagement and enthusiasm. Whilst pupils benefit from a broad and engaging curriculum, there is a significant focus on English and mathematics – since an early understanding of these skills underpins success in so many other subjects in due course.
Music, Drama, French and PE are taught by specialist teachers throughout the Lower Prep years, starting in Reception, and the boys benefit from seeing senior staff on a regular basis throughout the term. There is a competitive 6+ Academic Scholarship for talented boys for entry into Year 3.
The school day runs from 8:30am to 3.45pm with an optional after-school club until 5.00pm. Break times are supervised carefully and the boys make creative use the adventure playground, play football or invent their own games! There are competitive fixtures in major sports against other schools from Year 3 upwards and all boys learn to swim as a part of our commitment to the acquisition of important life skills.
Assemblies take place twice each week, one of which is topical in content for Lower Prep pupils, and one of which is for the whole school. This offers a wonderful opportunity for the headmaster to celebrate the boys’ achievements with plentiful awards and certificates in front of our school community. Each class has its own showcase assembly once a year to which parents are warmly invited, as well as the Christmas Nativity, which is a much-loved annual production.
We believe firmly in the concept of learning beyond the classroom and all boys enjoy a range of school outings, including a residential trip each year from Year 3, during which time they derive greater independence and a growing appreciation of teamwork. Furthermore, a Forest School initiative is taught onsite to children in Reception to Year 3 by a trained Forest School instructor. For those boys who demonstrate consistent consideration for others, there is the potential to be appointed as a Lower Prep monitor in Year 4.
In Lower Prep, we are ambitious for each boy, relative to his ability, in a conducive environment of small classes and gentle support which helps them achieve more than they believe is possible. It is rewarding to successfully instil the Kingswood House values in our boys at the start of their educational journey and track their progress through Upper Prep and Seniors.
